Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-transmitted alpha wirusbelonging to the Togaviridae family, first isolated inTanzania in 1952.Three lineages with distinct genotypicand antigenic characteristics have been identified.chikungunya virus is endemic to some parts of Africa andcauses recurrent epidemic waves in Asia and theIndiansubcontinent. At the end of 2013 the virus emerged in theAmericas.Human beings serve as the main chikungumyawirus reservoir during epidemic periods. In Africa, someanimals constitute the virus reservoir during non-epidemicperiods sustaining vims circulation. Clinical signs ofchikungumya virus infection include sudden onset fever andsevere arthralgia (joint pain) affecting mainly the extremitiesbut also the larger joints.Erratic,relapsing, andincapacitating joint pain is the hallmark of chikungunyavirus.Up to 12% of patients still have chronic joint painthree years after the onset oftheir illness. Qther symptomsof the infection (headache, fatigue and rash) are commonamong many arborviral infections including chikungumyavirus. There is no specific therapy for chikungunya virusinfection. Patients are symptomatically treated withantiinflammatory medication.
